My USSSA 10U All Star team played in a tournament this weekend on a relatively small field for this age. The foul lines were 165' and center was 182'. There were two large oak trees behind the left field fence that extended over the field. If a fly ball were to hit the branches, what would be the call? Live ball, ground rule double? Since no ground rules were discussed prior to the game, I would assume the trees would be considered part of the field. Live ball and play it off the tree. Fortunately this situation didn't occur, but it sure could have. A lefty from the other team hit it out to right center. Had he been a righty, it would have been in the trees.

At old Tiger Stadium, the upper deck hung out over the playing field. Balls hit there were home runs, so I would have to assume that the balls hit off the tree would be home runs. But this really should be discussed before the game.

I have a field with trees overhanging outfield fence. Pro sized field. At all plate meetings at that complex, the local umpires put them out of play, home run if batter hits them on the fly. No formal G/R for this complex.

Our showcase diamond (ie - best diamond in the region...) has trees overhanging both over the right field fence and down the 1st base line in foul territory.
If the ball makes contact with the trees over the right field fence (on the fly), then it is a HR. If the ball hits the trees in foul territory to the right, it is a dead ball and a foul ball. |

the call would be determined from what the ground rules for the playing field were set before the game started..if no ground rules were set then that is an umpires mistake because he should of realized the trees were in play.
but to any call that wwould need to be made i would have to say that the ball was interfered with and no more than to bases could be attained since the tree would have touched the live ball. that is one thing that has to be covered in the pregame with the coaches.

while umpiring I have yet to WIN, LOSE, or even TIE a game. I am only there to call it like I see it. |

That's exactly
What I was thinking, I do a number of games for Sam, not so far this year as my sched is all messed up, but soon. I agree, though I love that field, except the backstop and getting drilled in the back of the head on foul balls. I got a helmet now so I don't care as much now.
I'm umpin at the fairgrounds tomorrow morning. |

Prentice Cup high school I assume?
I played high school ball last year.... I also play Junior in Newmarket now, maybe Sam will ask you to do one of my games this year.... I also umpire at the Fairgrounds quite often, and whenever a foul ball goes off of the screen, I slide my mask up to the top of my head.... haha |
