I most certainly did not leave out the "tongue in cheek" emoticon. As umpires we are the expert on the rules. It is our responsibility to protect the "stupid and the clueless" from themselves. When we knowing allow a safety rule to be violated and an injury occurs because of our negligence we are legally responsible for that injury. MTD, Sr.

This was a Summer League Connie MacK game about 25 years ago. Nobody is suggesting skirting Safety rules but, sometimes S$$t happens, even in your games, I am sure. Let me ask, did you actually check players for athletic cups prior to the FED rule requiring the HC to be responsible for players and equipment?
