Always worked for me. And early in the season, it's common.
We've just gotta get everybody to "get the memo" and clean these things up the very first game, and not be intimidated by any coach who thinks it's superfluous because he himself didn't "get the memo." Remember, rule changes are precipitated by coaches, not officials. It's their problem when we enforce what they themselves have come up with, not ours. Right?
Just do it.

I don't agree that I need to ask that question to enforce the rule.
