They would have to have been aware of the clock situation
before they went to the monitor in order to deal with it. They were only going to the monitor because they're required to do so in the case of a shot being taken near the expiration of the half.
The first bullet point under using the monitor (at least in the women's game) under NCAA guidelines from this year's clinic is "Determine what is being reviewed." Basically, you can't go to the monitor looking for one thing and then deal with another.
