Regrets, I've Had A Few, But Not This Time ...

Used to coach middle school basketball. Beating a weaker team by about twenty points late in the game. Shut down the press, and stopped fast breaking, late in the first half. Starters started third period and sat down after a cup of coffee. Second stringers played most of the second half. Third stringers came in with about six minutes to go in the game.

Team manager tells me that my captain, and starting point guard, had tied the school record for assists in a game. This was one of the nicest, hardest working, team oriented, unselfish, student athletes that I had ever coached in my twenty-five plus year coaching career. I tell my captain that the third string rookies need some direction, and to get out there, and run the offense. Two great passes are made to wide open players, who nervously miss wide open layups. I gave some thought to getting a few of my starters back in there, but opted against it so as to not be perceived as running up the score. Finally a post player gets a pass at the elbow and makes the jump shot. New school record, to a most deserving player.

Running up the score? Guilty as charged.
