I got it . . . you get it . . . ohhhh

Bizarre start up last night, got me thinking.

The situation was that a team came out and set up in the defensive end of the court, and sent their PG to jump ball. No big deal.

As I toss it up the little guy stays on the floor and gets into a defensive stance. Opposition wins the tap if awkwardly at the confusion and the team who lost the tap is set up in their 3/4 court trap and springs it immediately. Leads to a turnover on a pass out of bounds. The game is off and rolling.

What I got thinking, is I know the game starts with a tap of the ball by 1 of the two jumpers. If the same play happens but the opponent decides he's confused and opts not to tap the ball and it comes down without being touched?? what occurs? We wait to start the clock and play until someone touches it? Can someone else sweep in and get it? Do we have to rejump and demand someone touch it or call unsportsmanlikes??
