I don't gear up for spring league (kids of 8 to 12 years age) the way I do for fall (bantam leagues of 13-15 yrs, midget up to 18, plus high school) is about 100 hours of aerobic exercise and book study. My tool of choice is cycling, as I'm a reasonably decent endurance cyclist.

My workout routines will usually start aroun May/June, with bike rides of around 20k (in and above my normal commute) three days out of seven, if I can make it stick. Some summer, my Sundays become my long-distance day, and I start stretching out 30km, 40km, etc. By July, I'm well into the 80-120km distance once every week, plus high end sprints and short intervals at high energy to really thrash the aerobic systems. Sometime in August, I start tuning up the running game with sprints (I haaaaate jogging, which is why I bike) to transfer the bike muscles into something ready for running.

I also work on core exercises as well.

An out-of-shape referee is one that is prone to making mistakes - especially when heat or a lengthy and hotly-contested game is involved. Just as tired, out-of-shape athletes make mistakes, the same holds true for officials. In fact, I firmly believe that all officials should be fit and that officials should be tested - and assigned - with their fitness levels in mind. There's too many old, fat, out-of-shape officials working the elite levels when they are clearly and physically unabele to do so. (I'm 37, so I may be old, but I ain't fat... too much, anyhow.)

If there is NOTHING else you can do, get in shape and get good quality professional gear.
