You are reading more into this than necessary. Don't overthink the process. And do not confuse a position/slot in the line up with an actual batter/player.

As noted, find the lead off on the line-up card and look up one space until you see the name of a player. Granted, if you don't find a name in the first two positions you check, the game should e over.
