IMO, one of the biggest use of a misnomer of which most people in this country are not aware.
Look at a map. Anyone who does not live in one of the five boroughs or on the island conveniently refer to themselves as "upstaters" to avoid the connection with the city.

Hell, I've even heard folks from Yonkers refer to themselves as upstaters, at times.
In most areas, to be an "upstater", you would live in the Northern half of the state. In NY, you can live on the Southern border and still be an "upstater".
