Their idea of preparing it for wear is to pull it out and shake it as if that causes all dirt to fall off and smooths out the wrinkles. And it isn't just jackets, but shirts and pants, also.
I have no doubt you keep and treat your equipment with much care, but like I said, you asked the question.

I've seen some "umpires" like that - one even sniffed his shirt to - well, I don't really know what he was checking. I was glad when that game was over.
