What rule says you can't throw the ball off your own backboard? Does it really matter if its a throw or a try?
The only rule I know about throwing the ball off a backboard deals with the opponent's backboard. If you throw it off an opponent's backboard it's the same as it hitting the floor. So the possibility of the player lifting their pivot foot before starting a dribble or a double dribble violation are in play. The same conditions do not apply to your team's backboard.
Watching a regional tournament in Nome, AK, a girl dribbled and threw the ball at the opponent's basket three times. Each time hitting the backboard. Should have been a dribbling violation. The third attempt ended up scoring for the opponent, but should never have counted because it should have been ruled a double dribble.
