I think the main reason that soccer is played in two different seasons is mainly the fact you would not have that many officials to cover the sport adequately if both genders played at the same time. The same thing goes for volleyball. And not many schools play soccer in this state as compared to some other sports.
It makes perfect since to me.

I'd say Rut's right about the number of officials... and add in the number of girls who play both
VB and soccer... and often the boys coach is also the girls coach... and lots of other stuff.
