Just because a bat
can be try doesn't mean that this one
was a try. The NCAA rules clearly state that the shot clock resets when a TRY strikes the ring or flange. You have to judge whether the tap/bat was a try or part of rebounding action or just two knuckleheads who didn't realize they were on the same team. (I know you know all that already, too.)
The original sitch sounds to me like it was not a try, but I didn't see it obviously.
