intentional miss- free throw hits rim, violation

Hi all. New user. I've looked through some of the past threads and learned a good deal- that one on the shot being fumbled and could the player shoot or dribble after was a good one. (shoot-pass, not dribble)

1. Is there anything wrong with intentionally missing a free throw, at the end of the game for example? A friend got called for a violation for throwing the ball really hard and one-handed. hit the rim and went off but the ref called it. It was a close game, down by two so he was trying to miss. I assume most of us have seen it done before so I was thinking maybe because he threw it too hard or one-handed?
