Wasn't there a play where the shot is killed while in the air, I thought this was the situation, but maybe not.

String them all together and you end up with "The ball becomes dead, or remains dead, when a foul, other than player- or team-control, occurs except that the ball does not become dead until the try or tap ends when [the foul] occurs while a try or tap for a field goal is in flight."
IOW, the ball is dead when a non player- or team-control occurs, UNLESS a try is in flight, in which case the ball is not dead until the try ends.
The ball would be dead if it were a player control foul, or if any member of the shooting team committed a violation (e.g., leaving the court, swinging elbows, offensive BI).
