Dave,
Let's get a starting point here. About how wide has your stance been - when you have been comfortable. Then, how wide do you think you need to be.
I'm a proponent of a wide stance. I am about 6'1 and my feet are probably about 38-40 inches apart when I get into my plate stance.
Part of my daily exercise is stretching. Part of my weekly routine includes lifting with the legs.
Mike is right - you need to begin to move to that stance you want - not move to that wide all at once (however wide that is).
