Flamin, just from your question I can see one of your priorities is off, and I am surprised no one has mentioned it.

If the ball hits the ground before passing 1st or 3rd, then where it lands is irrelevant. Don't even include that fact in your thought process. And don't worry about whether it crosses the line, comes back, does a little dance, and goes back over.

Here it is, in easy form.

If it hits the ground before passing 1st or 3rd, then all that matters is whether the ball is fair or foul when it A) is touched, B) finally does pass 1st or 3rd (even if it does this in the air), or C) comes to rest.
