I've seen the replay and the only thing I can think off is that he was blocked by Cano the second baseman and couldn't see the base. However there is one camera angle that was shown from his view point and from the angle shown I can't see how he missed it. To add insult to injury the next batter blooped one to right and the Mariners tie the game then Mariano gives up a dinger in the 9th. Yanks lose,
I bet he is glad it was the last game of the series and not the first.

Hey it happens, however did Gerry Davis give up the dinger in the ninth inning.
Blame the officials which has become a battle cry whenever a team loses.
Amateur baseball comment:
There will be a beautiful day for baseball, A sports complex with many fields. Plenty of participants however, no games being played. Where are the officials?
ESPN etc. have made our jobs as amateur umpires more difficult. The bottom line is: No matter how good an official one is you will not get EVERY call right. It's a fact of life. Also, let's not forget, we do not have SUPER SLO MO to aid us out there.
Bottom Line: The Yanks still had a chance to get out of the inning. F1 did not get the job done and gave up a base hit. Also, one if not the greatest closers in the history of the sport gave up a dinger.
Don't worry Yankee fans Roger is on his way after ge gets his 18 holes in
