Why not just say "Coach, we had some miscommunication. We messed up by not having the correct shooter on the line."? And then explain how to fix it. If this is a close game and you make that comment to the coach (who may not have known your partner was a newbie), now you are going to have all kinds of issues with credibility for him. To me this conversation with the coach should have not included an I. We always talk about being in this together, this was a good opportunity to help coaches remember that. jmho.
