Leaving any particular player out of the discussion, what is the point of filing for free agency? If your contract has expired with your previous club, why aren't you just automatically a free agent? What does "filing" accomplish?

Also, is it true that they've removed the "penalty" regarding signing with your old team by a certain date? If I remember correctly, that rule was the basis for one of the "collusion" lawsuits the players filed. It was when nobody signed Tim Raines as a free agent and he had to wait till May 1 to re-sign with the Expos.
To be quite honest, I really don't know all of the ins-and-outs of how it works. I think that if you don't file, you can only negotiate a new contract with your last team. If you file, you can negotiate with any team.

And, yes, I read somewhere too that they removed that signing date from the new labor contract.

And yes, LaRussa is, was, and remains the ultimate dickhead in all of MLB.
