Also, is it true that they've removed the "penalty" regarding signing with your old team by a certain date? If I remember correctly, that rule was the basis for one of the "collusion" lawsuits the players filed. It was when nobody signed Tim Raines as a free agent and he had to wait till May 1 to re-sign with the Expos.

To be quite honest, I really don't know all of the ins-and-outs of how it works. I think that if you don't file, you can only negotiate a new contract with your last team. If you file, you can negotiate with any team.
And, yes, I read somewhere too that they removed that signing date from the new labor contract.
And yes, LaRussa is, was, and remains the ultimate dickhead in all of MLB.
