Let's face it, anyone making a mistake of that magnitude will face some tough criticism. IMO, if the choice is between being criticized for making a bad decision that affected the game, versus being criticised for making two bad decisions but with a much, much less impact on the game, I would go with the second option.
It is not clear from the original post if the refs realised the mistake at any stage.
And as a side note, wonder what score did this crew get on their state certification test.
Doing what you suggest is just compounding the original bad mistake, kiwi. Two screw-ups ain't better than one. Doing what you suggest is just wrong.....and indefensible also.

Btw, how can it be "equitable" if you're deliberately screwing one team? The first one was simply a mistake. The second one wouldn't be.
