Just My 2 Cents...

I use to umpire for some local little leagues and I started out (when I was 16) with the old balloon and the mask etc… that was loaned to me by the rec department

Then I decided to purchase my 1st set of equipment when I was to work other “youth” level games. (Where in some leagues 5 balls to the batter is a walk, no balk penalty – just a reset)… You get my idea (an instructional league – not “real” ball)

I purchased the Rawlings Cool-Flo that Strike3UROUT has purchased along with a cheap interior protector. I do say the vision is better then I have ever seen with a regular mask. Are you out of uniform without the hat – yes ~ the trade off is - the vision is better, the vents do keep you cool and its somewhat easy to hold with your indicator (same as the regular mask).

Now, this year I received a B-JV schedule this year here in NJ. I went out and purchased a “real mask” as the people here like to say (in NJ)…Regular ump’s mask. I have been debating this so I’m asking for advice…

I think the helmet is better, people say it looks more professional. Does the helmet do a better job in protection and visibility? I would say absolutely. The problem is it looks to big… What would you guys use if you had the choice?
