Had a similar play last year doing ASA Coed Adults, I am only umpire:
R1 on 1st, 1 out, Batter hits a sharp one hopper to F6 who steps on 2B and fires ball to F3. F3 misses 1B by at least 3 ft, I think she thought there were 2 outs. F3 tosses ball on ground toward pitching rubber. The BR only went about half way to 1B before stopping and yelling to her team on the third base side, 'Hey bring me my glove.' The defensive team starts to leave the field while the other team is gathering their gloves to come onto the field. I am lucky the catcher is paying attention and notices that I am not going to my normal position between innings and asks me, 'Is that 3 outs?'. I say 'No'. She very quietly goes and picks up the ball and walks over to 1B and steps on the bag. I ring up the 3rd out, I still don't think the offensive team knows what happened.
I wondered too, when would I have finally called the 3rd out if the catcher wouldn't have bailed me out. And what if the BR was playing 1B and their dugout was on the 1B side, so someone threw her her glove and she ran over and touched 1B. Was she out as soon as she grabbed the glove or safe when she touched 1B? Or better yet she went passed 1B without touching it while waiting for someone to bring her the glove? This could pose other problems like if she has to avoid one of the fielders running off the field, is this now OBS?
