Under NFL rules, the contact you describe would not be an
automatic ejection. That doesn't mean it's not ejectable, nor that he shouldn't have been ejected for it.
Under Fed rules, this
is an automatic ejection, for intentionally contacting an official. And if it's me, this player is done - no one should be grabbing an official to get his attention. Ever.
