Sounds like the perfect opportunity to VERBALL instruct the players (when he's standing there with the ball waiting). A firm "Lets Go" might stop phase 1 of your delima.
If you started your count and they threw the ball to you - why restart again? I'm thinking it deflects where ever and you keep counting.
