The coach has been blamed for the entire incident and rightfully so. You can't place blame on the kids. What 17 year old kid do you know that would say, "No coach, that's illegal. I'm not going to do it."? For that and other reasons, the team is not being punished, just the head coach, and to a lesser extent, the asst. coach.

Sounds fair to me.
If this game was played under Federation rules, the coach should have been given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when the violation was discovered.

The referee is suppose to ask with the umpire as witness, "are all you players legally equipped." Once upon a time is was incumbent for officials to check players but now the coach's certification subjects him to a penalty if a player is not legally equipped.

I would love to hear the officials side of the story.
