A play like this first occurred in 1918 with Navy playing against Great Lakes Naval Academy.
A Navy player came off the sidelines to tackle a breakway runner from Great Lakes stopping what would have been the tying score. Officals back then had no idea what to do.
It's happened at least once more since then but now there is rule in place to deal with it.
