Ump25, be clear about what Dan suggested: threaten to call the cops if the guy doesn't leave you alone. You can be as cool about this as you like.
Of course, if he assaults you, the time for threats has passed and you should just make the call. But umpires should not have to put up with harrassment either, and you have as much right to be in that (public) place as the disgruntled fan. The threat seems an appropriate response.
I guess from your post that you'd be inclined to give it right back to the guy, but in our litigious and gun-happy society this strategy strikes me as potentially escalating and too risky. Your community might be different, but I would usually not banter with an angry stranger, even in a public place.
A sad fact about society, perhaps; and I come from a family full of lawyers, so I might be overly risk-averse. But there it is.
