Using Tee's maxim that asst coaches do not exist, should the head coach be warned instead (to control his employee), or should the AC be warned directly, before they are given the boot? Any other helpful tips on managing these pests?
I'd talk to the head coach and tell him to get his assistant under control. That would be about the only courtesy I'd extend at that point. After that, the assistants really would cease to exist.

Again, there is a bit of literary license in the "assistant coaches do not exist" mantra. I'm polite to them, I'll talk to them, I'll even discuss the occasional thing with them. But I won't argue with them or get into a long-term discussion with them. And they will get sent away much, much quicker than a head coach would.
