If you are correctly getting into the "slot" position you will be sitting down (rather than bending over). Tuck your arms to your body and bring your hands next to each other hanging freely between your legs.
Even if your hands do get hit (I've never had it happen), they will give with the impact. You may bruise, but have minimal chance of breaking bones.
Do not place your hands on your thighs or knees! They are not only more exposed, but there is no give and you will break bones if hit there.
Another advantage of this arm position is that it gets "the wings" in. If your hands are on your thighs you elbows will point out (and be more vulnerable).
