If one purchases "proper" umpiring pants (i.e. manufactured for the sole purpose of umpiring), they are already reinforced in all the areas that matter. That is one of the reasons that they cost a little more than the department store "action-style" slacks.
I have to agree, real umpiring pants and not "action slacks" or some other pant is the proper way to go.
The money you spend will pay off in the long run as they will last longer and they don't require "special" alterations to get them to work.

People who buy other pants, often spend 2 dollars just to save a buck.
