It's just a saying, Zebe. I suppose different people mean different things by it. The advantage gained by the defender if she gives a slight bump to the shooter, is probably greater and more worthy of a call than the advantage gained if the shooter gives a slight bump to the defender. So it looks as though we're calling it tighter on the shooter, yea.
I know it's just a saying. Not trying to be pain in your butt, just thinking that "stay with shooter" is better than "protect the shooter."

At camp, I was once told that contact is initiated by the offensive player 20%-30% of the time yet a foul is called on the defensive player 95% of the time. His point is that we shouldn't "protect the shooter" because we already protect them way too much.
