I do remember there were some mess-ups by crews specifically in the NCAA Tournament which I am sure helped the changing of the rule. But their remedy was to add a "loose ball" foul element to it like the NBA and just shoot the FTs now. I do not think it is that hard to do with the original rule, but apparently, some did not know the rule.
