Of course, on the rare chance that the unlisted substitute illegally enters the court due to not being beckoned, said substitute doesn't become a "player" until the ball becomes live, so depending on when it's discovered that he is unlisted, there could be small window of opportunity to send the unlisted substitute back to the bench with no penalty.
4-34-3: A substitute becomes a player when he/she legally enters the court. If entry is not legal, the substitute becomes a player when the ball becomes live.
