Unhappy Ugh

I'm sure everyone gets these every once in a while. But yesterday, my match was one of those that people point to who say, "Reffing volleyball is easy and boring." Oh my gosh. This match was horrible. It was a varsity match and neither team could run an offense. Bump, bump, bump. Or set it back over the net on the first hit.

And to make it worse, it went the full 5 sets!!!! It was not fun or interesting at all.

I don't even have a point. I just need to purge the bad feelings before my match this afternoon.

I had one Tuesday like that. No flow. Terrible ball handling. Partner forgot to even bring his whistle (seriously). It wasn't even easy money; it was church ball and I was a volunteer

Hope todays match goes better for you.

It is during those matches that I am truly thankful to live in Illinois, where high school volleyball is two out of three. On the other hand, it is during the very intense, well played matches that I sometimes wish I lived in another state... as the IHSA does not require the use of line judges during the regular season.

Our JV matches are 2 out of 3. All sets are to 25 points. Varsity is 3 out of 5; fifth set to 15 points, and change sides at 8 points.

We don't have line judges either in the regular season.

One of the things that made yesterday's match so unbearable was that on Tuesday, I was R2 for a phenomenal -- and intense -- match between last year's D2 regional champ vs the second place team in their conference, which features a girl who's going NCAA D1 next year.

Wow, talk about requiring a decisive win...

That's way more than a mere super majority, that's like an uber majority or something.

LOL. Sorry about that, I've gone back and fixed it.

I mentioned to my partner this afternoon which match I worked yesterday. (I didn't even blast my negativity onto him, I swear.) He said, "Oh man. Did you feel like quitting when it was done?" So I guess I wasn't overreacting. That makes me feel a little better about the whole thing.

I can't imagine doing a match without line judges.

Although, with some of the ones that I have had recently, I may have been better off without......

Hopefully the teams will be less evenly matched this time
