This will be my fourth season officiating for high school. What helped me in the beginning was spending some time observing experienced refs. Tournaments are a good time for this. For me the best thing was to get up there and actually ref. My first season I took any matches they could schedule me for. I also asked many questions of the refs that I worked with. I don't have experience officating other sports, but volleyball moves at a fast pace. You have to stay completely focused on the game. If you start letting your eyes or mind wander, you're going to miss things that happen. You can't get flustered about mistakes because the game keeps right on going. Good luck!

Thanks M it sounds like my basketball experience will help because it sounds like your describing the same game.
