Yet another first for me

Working AAU Nationals this past week. I was R2 on a match with a very promising young female official. But we had a play in which the Libero used an overhead pass with her foot on the attack line. The ball was attacked above the height of the net. No whistle from R1.

I tried to signal to give help, but she didn't look at me. So I blew the whistle. First time I've called an illegal attack as R2.

We had a great conversation after the match, including that play, of course.

You'd be surprised at the number of people unwilling to wear headsets, no matter how much you try to convince them that it'll make their lives much easier.

I wouldn’t. I was one of them for some time.

And I have plenty of colleagues that still refuse. Though I’ve also hooked on headsets several partners, that now ask me if I forget to offer.

At USAVs in Indy yesterday, I also called "reaching over" when the setter tried to pull back an overpass that was in the plane of the net. Very rare call for me, personally.

Not a lot of people using them down here. Saw a lot more in Indy.
