Back Row Attack

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bx1Eemczxc
I hope you are able to view this YouTube video
Forward to 30:25. Is this a Back Row attack violation?
Libero is in front of the attack line. Contacts the ball with 2 hands over the head. The next resulting hit is attacked from above the net into the opponents side of the net

If the R judged that to be a set, then it's a BRA.

I know there's some case play that allows some "overhand contact" by the Libero to be considered not a set -- but I would think this would be a relatively rare occurrence.

Cool Libero (maybe setting) & BRA

If that was a set, then it would be a double hit. But it's first contact. Lets call it what it is (1st contact) and let it go, play continues.

First contact can also be a set -- there's no requirement that a set can only occur on the second contact.

The following elements appear to be present in this play...

- libero is positioned on or in front of attack line
- libero sets ball using overhand finger action
- next hit (attack) takes place while the ball is entirely above the height of the net
- attack is completed (ball completely crosses the vertical plane of the net)

As a result, the proper signal sequence for the R1 is...

- Award point to appropriate team
- Signal illegal back row attack on offending team
- Point to libero to indicate the violation is a result of her set

This looks like a good call to me.

I agree. Illegal BRA. This is where a good R2 is able to explain to the coach why the call was what it was, as the R1 is explaining to the captain.

Something else I noticed on this video. So much for the lines being visible. You can hardly make out the sideline and endline when they cross inside the 3 point line on the basketball court. Uggg.
