Based on your description, I am assuming not only did the R2 not see the coaches talking to each other, the R2 would not know how to handle this situation due to lack of experience. I would have probably blown my whistle to get my R2's attention and called him over. I would instruct the R2 to tell both coaches on how he was going to handle the visiting scorekeeper issue (whatever that was) and then send both coaches back to their benches. This way everyone knows what is going on and it keeps the possibility of this situation from escalating.
