Rolled Bat?

Fed game - While checking bats in the VT dugout I noticed one bat (mixed in with their large assortment) that had a deep groove indented all the way around the bat about 1/2 inch from the end cap. When I began examining the bat and questioned the coach she simply pulled it and said that "nobody ever uses that one except for practice". My partner contended (just to me) that it was "an old bat" with an ASA mark of 2004 so even if it were altered, it was basically worthless now.

Do they make any bats that have a grove near the end, or was this most likely an infamous "rolled bat" I've heard so much about?
