My partner contended (just to me) that it was "an old bat" with an ASA mark of 2004 so even if it were altered, it was basically worthless now.

Do they make any bats that have a grove near the end, or was this most likely an infamous "rolled bat" I've heard so much about?
Your partner is misinformed. Some of the older bats ARE the ones which change more through alteration.

AFA the bat, that crease means the barrel was not smooth and obviously damaged and should have been removed from the field. Just because a coach states it isn't used, doesn't mean it will not suddenly re-appear in a player's hands later in the game and you may be forced to be the bad guy.
