NFHS - BOO Play & Penalty
No outs, R1 on 1st. It's B2's turn to bat, but B3 bats out of order and hits into a 6-4-3 double play. Defense now appeals BOO and UIC upholds the appeal.
How many outs are there now and who should be batting next. I know that by rule 7-1-2 Penalty 2, "all outs stand", but our state interpreter thinks this is a triple play. I think the fact that the improper batter's turn at bat is "negated" causes the out on R1 to stand, B2 declared out for failing to bat, and B3 becomes the next batter with two outs. Does anyone out there know the correct NFHS interpretation? |
How can you have an out on a batter whos turn at bat is negated? Im pretty sure this was on the FED test either last year or the year before. All outs stand except for any out made on the improper batter. You have the call correct, the out at 2nd stands, the improper batters at bat is negated, the batter who should have batted B2 is out and the correct batter is B3.
Under former ASA rules this would have been a triple play, but ASA changed their rules to match the FED ruling. |

ASA comment - yep. |
Yup, need runners starting at 2nd & 1st (and plays at 3rd & 2nd) to get a triple-play with BOO...

Inform the state interpreter to take a look at NFHS Case Play 7.1.2H (emphasis in red is mine):
7.1.2 SITUATION H: Batter B1 is due up but B2 bats instead. B2 hits a ground ball and is (a) safe at first or (b) thrown out at first. The defensive team properly appeals batting out of order. RULING: In both (a) and (b), the player who should have batted, B1 is declared out by the umpire and B2's turn at bat is nullified. In (a), B2 is removed from first base. In both (a) and (b), B2 is now the proper batter and bats again with one out and no runners on base. (7-1-2 Penalty) Note that the out at first base in (b) doesn't count. The only out recorded is on B1 for failing to bat in the proper order. |
Can I ask for clarification please. ASA 2014 (7-2-D2-c) Last sentence. Still says any outs remain outs, and does not state an exception for when the improper batter is one of the outs.
