From your responses, I assume esq was replying to my post (he's on my ignore list).

All of the softball organizations I call for specify as you have said, "R1 is the leadmost runner, R2 is next, etc." I merely use the nomenclature of the organization, hence, this is the "correct" nomenclature.

Also, as a pragmatic matter, when posting situations on this board, it is the nomenclature that most clearly says what you want to say.

If anyone wants to argue with the choice of nomenclature, the people you need to argue with are at ASA, NFHS, etc.

FWIW, NCAA is the only SB organization (that I am familiar with) that use the starting base as the runner designation.
R1 - 1st
R2 - 2nd
R3 - 3rd.
