Question? I was the PU, utrip. We had spectator interference via a player for a team to play next game warming up in the outfield. This is a city league therefore there is no room elswhere and this has been a common practice for years. (maybe we need to look at this but..) We have a fly ball to left and the fielder is tracking the ball and imo had a better than average shot at making the catch (one never knows until it's done). Also, runner on first. The fielder while tracking the ball and very close to it collides with the player warming and the ball falls. I declare the br out, explaining that I believe the fielder would have caught the ball had no interference occured and we keep the runner on first. All players agreed, no arguments, but I'm curious if this was the correct call. Comments please.

Oh, I don't know... look up Yankees v Braves in the World Series in Yankee Stadium. I think you should have ruled a home run!

We're utrip also. We have some back-to-back fields where outfield collisions can/do occur. Local assoc suggests we use judgement for the play (i.e. out or not - advance runner or not)

Not specifically the same as your situtation, but sounds like you made the right call.

Thanks Tom I didn't even think of that.
Thanks Rack.
I'm still wondering about the runner on first. Should He have been awarded a base. How do you handle the runners on in your situation, Rack.

With back-to-back fields, we set a ground rule of dead ball, same two bases awarded as dead ball under the fence, etc.

AFAIK, spectator interference rules say the umpire awards bases to nullify the effect of the interference, somewhat like an obstruction judgement.

If the spectator interferes with a fielder's opportunity to catch a fly ball, the batter is out, others placed where the umpire judges they would have reached. (ASA 8-2N) If the spectator interferes with a fair batted or thrown ball, the ball is dead and runners placed where the umpires judges they would have reached. (ASA 8-5L)

Did not know you did AFA CecilOne. The actual rule is
Section 8.7

Sorry, that meant "as far as I know". No AFA, don't even know what it is and I really don't need a 7th rule set.

CecilOne,

I was just funning you. I have seen you post on AFA, so
did not think that you were quoting their rules.

Be nice Tom. AFA is a good organization. Rules are the
same as NCAA. I have an AFA State tournament next weekend
with over 90 teams in it. Two weeks later I have the 18U
Nationals. This weekend I am doing a 14U B ASA State. In
between the AFA State and Nationals, I am taking part in the
NSA World Series.

Yeah, I know. I was picking on Cecil (in fun), not on AFA. In fact, I called an 18U AFA NQ this year.

Good show. What team is coming to Beaumont from that
tournament?

I'm just curious here...is it so much easier to type "utrip" over USSSA?
