Uniform Number

ASA Rules.

Both teams submit official line-up prior to game. During the second inning, Team A had B1 up (#13), she walked. Team B points out the line up card showed #3 and wants illegal substitution and her out. There was a #3 on the bench, but they insist that it was a typo.

What's the correct call here?

Thanks!

Check the names, if the name is correct, fix the lineup card and play on.

How do you check the names? Other than take their word for it?

Players don't lie to umpires, do they?

While you are talking to coaches and the player in question isnt paying attention, call out the name on lineup card and see who turns around.

This is one of my problems with the way this particular rule is written. Everyone on the field goes by jersey number, that is how we identify the player, but the rules state as long as the name is correct, they lineup card can be corrected. Just as you have said, other than demanding a photo ID, birth certificate etc we have no way to identify with 100% accuracy who is actually on the field. If the coach isnt smart enough to put his own players numbers down correctly, then why shouldnt he get charged with a batting out of order, unreported substitution, illegal substitution etc.?

Exactly!! I think if the coaches cannot submit a correct line up card, even after they are asked by PU if correct, there should be a penalty.

ask the coach the players' names, fix the lineup card, and move on ... if a coach intentionally lies to you he/she will be outed soon enough

Personally, I like the "correct the number and move on" rule that ASA has. It is rarely an issue in the first place, and when it does come up, I have never even gotten a hint that there were shenanigans going on. The batting order defines where the player bats, not where the shirt bats. JMO.

Not relevant in ASA - but I agree
