Question

Last nites, my daughters last league game. haven't seen it in her level, ASA rules. F1 is on the rubber, B3 has one foot outa box taking signs, then B3 bails, runs around PU and sets up in opposite box, play goes on. This happened a few times with same girl, I know if this is BB, I'm banging an out. Am I really this SB stupid???

ASA Rule 7 Sec 3. D. The batter shall not step directly in
front of the catcher to the other batter's box while the
pitcher [FP Only] is taking the signal or [SP Only]is in
position to pitch, or anytime thereafter prior to the release
of the pitch.
It sounds as though the batter was not in the
box yet, so pitcher should not have been ready to deliver, and
I personally would allow this move without penalty. I might
warn the batter to be a little quicker in her decision, but it
sounds as though she was within the rule.

Ahem...

Well, I'll let that one go...

Anyway, I'd allow this, for just the rationale Glen stated. The only caveat is unless I thought this was a delay tactic. But, since she ran to the other side, it probably was not even that.

But doesn't "F1 is on the rubber, B3 has one foot outa box" mean one foot in the box and F1 ready to pitch? Of course, it's moot because the batter did not step in front of the catcher. It also would depend on whether F1 had taken the signal at that time.

Technically, the batter should ask for TIME before making this change (ASA Rule 7-3C). However, ASA emphasizes that the reason for 7-3C is to speed up the game, not penalize the youth player (POE 5). Therefore, unless this became a drag on the game, or unless it was late in the game and I judged that the coach was doing this to intentionally delay, the most I would do is warn the batter to ask for TIME next time.

Check your BB rulebook. Batters can change boxes during an "At Bat". Pitchers are restricted to being right or left-handed.
