A couple times recently I've had batters hurt enough by a pitched ball that they could not immediately continue to play (though usually they would re-enter an inning or so later). Saturday a girl took a 60 mph fast ball right on the elbow. She was hurting. When they finally got her up she was wobbly and in no mood to play anymore.
I asked the coach if he was going to sub for her and he said yes; but then told his player that she had to go and touch 1B before she could be sub'd out. Now I've heard this a couple time lately and I'm thinking that it's another one of those "myths" that linger on. What would they do if she had been hit in the ankle? Pick her up and carry her to 1B so she could touch the base with her good foot? The ball is dead the instant she is hit, and remains dead until put back into play by the umpire. So you should be able to substitute anytime during that period. Right? WMB |

No myth here, coach was correct. An injured player is required to touch all bases UNLESS the injury is of a nature which would prevent the player from doing so. In that case, a substitute may touch the appropriate bases once entered.
