I'm assuming then that states can come up with their format of preference? Thanx. |

Big Slick: I agree, because 99% of the time I do yell DEAD!! But you would not believe that almost 100% of the time yelling DEAD!! DEAD!! during a baseball game does NOT stop play. MTD, Jr., and I had a JV baseball game in May: With 2 outs, 2-2 count on the Batter, and a Runners on 1B and 2B, F1 commits a balk during his pitching motion; Junior yelled BALK!!, F1 continued through with his delivery and the Batter swung at the ball and connected on a shot in the right-center gap all the way to the fence. At that point we both started yelling DEAD!! DEAD!! But nobody (defensive players and coaches, offensive players and coaches) stopped and listened to us until after the B/R was standing on 3B and R1 and R2 having crossed HP. Now with the same 2-2 count and the Runners now on 2B and 3B, the Batter proceeds to take the next pitch for Striiiiiiike Threeee!! :D MTD, Sr. |
Around here, the most common format for tournaments is 2 pool games feeding into double elimination bracket.
There are some 3 or 4 pool plus single elimination. Showcases are often round-robin only to fix the times of the games so that coaches may be notified when the player's team is supposed to be playing. |

It was a double-elimination format, and had there been a What If game there were two new umpires to take our place because we had already worked 3 games that day and 8 total for the weekend. There were 3 age groups at the tournament with the 16U being played in Findlay, Ohio, and the 10U and 12U being played in Fostoria, Ohio. One TD for the 16U and one TD for the 10U and 12U, but all under the supervision of the District 19 Supervisor out of Findlay. A lot of softball and not enough umpires because there was also an ASA tournament in Toledo for 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U. Weird, that the the Toledo tournament was at the same time as the State Championships. MTD, Sr. |

BTW...they teach us down here...raise hands over head and yell, "TIME! That's a balk!". The call of "time" should always precede the call of "balk". |
:eek:Alright guys, that's enough about that other sport.
