study guide question nfhs.

I'm confused a little by the wording of this question but I'll print it exactly and ask for help.T/f The batter is out when,in the umpire's judgment, she prevents a ball from entering the strike zone.Thanks.

When the batter prevents a pitch from entering the strike zone it is a dead ball and a strike. See rule 7-2-1-h.

She would only be out if she already had two strikes when she did this!

(Of course, the unspoken understanding of the rule is that it is the batter's person/body that prevented the pitch from entering the zone- not contacting the pitch with the bat.)

IMO, the intent is to deal with a batter hit by pitch outside the batter's box and before it reaches the plate, when, in the umpire's judgment, it might have been a strike (if it had reached the strike zone). What is the call?

Options: Dead ball, out. Dead ball, HBP, awarded 1st. Dead ball, HBP, ball on batter. Dead ball, HBP, strike on batter. Dead ball, no pitch.

Your call?

Dead Ball, Strike and I agree with your thoughts on intent.
