I called three 16U fall games yesterday. Had two IFs called. They were routine IF situations, so no controversy there, but in the second one there was some interesting followup play.

Bases loaded, 1 out, routine infield pop up. I call the IF. All runners had taken a small lead. The catch is dropped, R1 and R2 both return to base, but R3 decides to run to 2nd, resulting in R1 on 3rd, R2 and R3 both on 2nd. Coach is yelling at his F6 to just walk the ball back to 2nd. F6 instead thrown to F4, who muffs the catch - ball goes into CF. R1 scores, R2 advances to 3rd, and R1 stays at 2nd. Coach then yells for his team to appeal R3 for leaving 1B early. So, ball is still live & the ball is thrown to F3 at 1st. I signal safe. Coach yells, "She left early, Blue. She can't leave early on an infield fly."

Did I say this was 16U?

That coach's statement is misinterpretation number 56-89B of the IFR.

Yes, you did, but were you referring to the players or the coach?

Dakota,

"Coach yells," she left early, blue. She can't leave early on an infield fly".

Technically, a runner can leave early on an infield fly.

I realize your's wasn't caught, but lets say:

Runner on first and second. IF, ball caught, both runners take small lead, as ball is thrown back to pitcher both runners take off to 3rd and 2nd. this confuses the pitcher. She looks at third, looks at second, and throws to second. Ball is not caught and goes to outfield. Neither runner went back to tag after the catch. now runner on 3rd, and 2nd coach yells runner on second didn't tag up. Ball trown to second, out #2 coach then yells runner on first didn't tag up. Runner on 2nd is now tagged with ball out #3. Finally a coach that was paying attention.

One of my favorite IFF stories.........but not an IFF..............grin

Anecdote By Ace Holleran

Sacks juiced, two outs. Batter lifts a high pop to F6, who muffs the catch. R3 scores, R2 comes home, as does the rock. F2 steps on the dish, "beating" R2. I (PU) had backed off the plate a good deal, since I could tell all sorts of madcap antics would follow the muff. Defensive coach has been a major rectal pain all game; he is stationed not far from me. He lets go with a torrent that begins as the batted ball lofts into the air. I wish I had this litany on tape:

"Okay, Charlie, you got it... it's an infield fly... ooh, Charlie, you frickin' knucklehead ... that's okay, the batter's still out ... HEY UMP THAT'S AN INFIELD FLY ... nobody can run ... hey that run don't count ... throw it home Charlie ... FORCE OUT ... INFIELD FLY ... FORCE OUT ... NO RUNS ... UMP, WE GOTTA DO THE WHOLE PLAY OVER ... APPEAL THAT ... I SAID APPEAL THAT! ... NO FAIR ... INFIELD FLY, G****MIT!"

I am leaving out a good 50 words that he added during the 10/15-second length of this play. I point to the plate twice, lift two fingers toward the scorekeeper, turn to the coach and say,

"Oh, shut up."

Ace Holleran

I got a million of em...............grin
